“Ravens, roses, and a ring… hm…” Doc Ham chose a maple donut from the box. “No… I can’t think of how any of that might connect to the Coldwells.”

“I was afraid of that,” Grace said. “It doesn’t mean much to me, either.”

“Is there a chance Tenley got mixed up, during the reading?”

“Minnie seemed to think it all went well. She acted as though she was very satisfied with the whole thing. She said Tenley was really in a trance.”

“I see....”

Grace sipped the hot coffee she’d just poured.

Doc Ham had a bite of his donut. Even when they weren’t perfectly fresh, they were still delicious. Grace had eaten one on the drive over. It wasn’t a nutritious lunch, but it was tasty.

Lucky sat at Doc’s feet, eagerly awaiting the crumbs that occasionally tumbled downward. She’d sniffed Carl, who was snoozing in the waiting room, when they entered, but the prospect of crumbs was more enticing than an interaction with her badger buddy.

“The bit about roses could pertain to the flower arranging night,” Grace said. “There were freshly cut roses there. Brian was killed that same night, about two hours after the event ended.”

“Good thinking, Grace.” Doc Ham nodded. “I see you’re in top form, despite our late night.” He yawned. Grace was about to suggest that he go home to get some rest when, abruptly, his eyes brightened. “Wait a second… you know what? I just thought of something.”

“What’s that?”

“This business about thirteen ravens… it reminds me of a note Maude made, years ago. When was that? It was about a woman, I think… ah, yes! I remember now. I thought of her when Quinn returned to town. He looks so much like his mother….” He freshened up his cup of coffee. “This could take some digging. I think her chart is in the annex.”

Grace had no idea what annex Doc Ham was referring to. She also hadn’t the foggiest idea what Brian’s deceased wife, Quinn’s mother, might have to do with the case. But, if it involved thirteen ravens, it might be worth looking into.

“Will you put up a sign, and the charmed bell?” Doc asked. “If we go dig up this chart, we’ll be gone for at least fifteen minutes, maybe longer.”

“Can do.” Grace rummaged around under the desk for a “Ring for assistance” sign, along with an enchanted antique cow bell. No matter how far she and Doc Ham were from that bell, they’d hear it ring if a walk-in patient gave it a jingle. If Doc Ham wants the bell out, this annex must be a good distance away, she thought.

She considered what she knew about Quinn’s mother as she followed Doc Ham down the clinic’s back hall. Her name was Mary. She died in a winter ice storm a decade before, when Quinn was eleven; her car went off the road and hit a telephone pole.

Doc Ham ducked into one of the treatment rooms. Along the back wall there was a tall set of shelves. When he pushed it aside, it rolled.
